ANAHEIM, Calif. (July 13, 2022) — Residents are teaming up with the Anaheim Ducks, the city of Anaheim and nonprofit Kaboom! to design a new playground based on what local kids and families want to see in their neighborhood playspace.
The 4,300-square-foot playground will be built in one day on Sept. 16 and will be the first phase in the transformation of a grassy field into Center Greens, a downtown park next to Anaheim City Hall and the Downtown Anaheim Community Center.
The 3.5-acre Center Greens will include a new basketball court, skate park, an obstacle course, a loop walking trail and more. The park is set to open in 2023.
Friday, July 15, will mark the start of the playground design as 50-plus children and parents from the neighborhood, the Anaheim Family YMCA and Anaheim summer programs join with Anaheim Ducks Head Coach Dallas Eakins, future Ducks prospects players and the Ducks Street Team for the playground design day.
Supporting the health and wellness of kids and families in the community, the design day celebration will include Ducks giveaways and outdoor sports and activities as well as the team’s Enforcer player inflatables. Kids will join Anaheim Ducks prospects and Street Team members to play street hockey, cornhole, Connect 4 and Jenga. The design day starts at 3 p.m. and is set to conclude at 5:30 p.m.
The design day will be followed by two months of final playground planning by the city of Anaheim, the Anaheim Ducks and KABOOM!. The project will culminate with a Sept. 16 build day for the new playground, where the Anaheim Ducks and community volunteers will transform the space into a customized, kid and teen-designed playspace, which will open for play in the days after the build.
This will be the 15th KABOOM! playground in Anaheim and the first sponsored by the Anaheim Ducks, rallying neighbors around the common goal of improving communities for our kids.
