Man Dies in Police Custody After Traffic Collision

ANAHEIM, Calif. (August 19, 2023) – An armed man who fled from police officers on a motorcycle has died following a traffic collision.

On Thursday, August 17, 2023, at approximately 11:15 p.m., a motorcyclist, later identified as 36-year-old Clinton Agapinan, fled from Anaheim PD Officers who were driving near Haster St. and Katella Ave. Officers did not pursue Agapinan and broadcasted Agapinan’s activity over the police radio. Shortly after doing so, Officers discovered Agapinan lost control of his motorcycle and crashed while riding at a high rate of speed near Katella Ave. and Stadium Crossing.

As Officers arrived at the scene of the collision, they approached Agapinan, who was lying on the ground, and immediately rendered medical aid. While doing so, Officers discovered Agapinan was in possession of a firearm. The Officers seized the firearm and continued to assess Agapinan and provide aid as firefighters and paramedics responded. While attempting to render aid, Agapinan became combative with the Officers, and Officers restrained him for their safety and his safety. Nearby California Highway Patrol Officers stopped and assisted Anaheim PD Officers.

After being handcuffed, Agapinan exhibited signs of medical distress. Officers removed Agapinan’s handcuffs, immediately rendered medical aid, and administered CPR until Anaheim Fire & Rescue personnel arrived. Anaheim Fire & Rescue personnel transported Agapinan to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Investigators from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office responded to investigate the incident and were assisted by Anaheim PD Homicide Detectives. The Major Incident Review Team (MIRT) and Internal Affairs will conduct concurrent investigations. Investigators from Anaheim PD’s Traffic Detail responded to investigate the collision. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the collision. The cause of the collision is under investigation.
