Site preparation underway for building of shopping center at Beach and Lincoln in west Anaheim

Site prep PR

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 29, 2023) — Site preparation is underway at Beach Boulevard and Lincoln Avenue to clear the way for the building of a retail center at the west Anaheim corner in early 2024.

On Aug. 14, crews started removing dirt and will be replacing it with new, fresh dirt in about 2.8 acres the northwest corner of the site.

The work, which will continue through the end of the year, will clear the way for the building of a shopping center with an expected Sprouts Farmers Market, In-N-Out Burger, Starbucks and others.

The first buildings of what’s known as 39 Commons are expected in late 2024 and into 2025.

The dirt removal and replacement is part of a final remediation plan for the site, which, through the years, served as a gravel pit, landfill, go-cart track and other uses.

The northwest corner where dirt is being removed and replaced served as a landfill for construction materials and mud from oil drilling in the late 1950s.

Crews are excavating about 25 feet of dirt in the area and filling it with new, clean dirt now stacked in mounds at the site.

The dirt removal and replacement will eliminate concerns about methane gas emissions from that portion of the onetime landfill site.

The work is taking place about where a former Tower Records store used to sit from 1992 to 2006.

For much of the past 20 years, the corner of Beach and Lincoln has sat empty.

In early 2022, the Nolin community of 65 townhomes opened on about 3 acres of the northeast corner of Beach and Lincoln that did not serve as a landfill.

The Nolin community finished construction in 2023, marking the first new homes in the area since the neighboring 102 townhomes of the Anacapa community opened northwest of Beach and Lincoln in 2005.

The redevelopment of Beach and Lincoln is part of our larger effort to rebuild Beach as an inviting, walkable, livable street with thriving businesses and to address to crime, blight and other issues impacting the area today.
